The  Church  Building

Our Lady of Good Counsel church is a treasured place of prayer and worship for the local community of Dennistoun and for Catholics from other parts of Glasgow and beyond. Christians from other ecclesial communities make a valued addition to our community, where all, irrespective of faith background, will find a warm welcome.

The church also attracts visitors for its architectural features as it is a good example of the modernist style favoured by its designers from the achitect firm, Gillespie, Kidd & Coia.

To explore this and other examples of Coia's work see Gillespie, Kidd & Coia: Architecture 1956-1987, Johnny Rodger (Ed.), RIAS, 2007. Photographs and other information are available from the GK&C archives which are housed in the Glasgow School of Art Archives and Collections. Click here for photographs.
Visiting the Church
We are happy to welcome people who wish to visit the church for reasons other than prayer and worship. Should you wish to experience the architectural and arstistic merits of this Coia church, please phone or email to arrange a visit. Unplanned visits will more than likely result in a wasted journey.
The weather extremes of 2018 allowed us to experience various aspects of the beauty of the church.

Our Blessed Mother, Mary, welcomes you to this church dedicated to her under the title of Our Lady of Good Counsel. For more on this title click here.
Our new statues of Our Lady and St Joseph ensure that devotion to the saints underpins our community prayer life and our own spiritual life.

The church is accessed up a set of stairs which remnd us of our climb to heaven, the leaving behind of the secular world and rising into the presence of God. The welcoming presence of Our Lady reminds us of her help on our faith journey. In the original plan, the baptismal font stood here, a visible reminder that it is through the gift of this sacrament that we enter into the Church, the mystical Body of Christ.
The church has undergone several cosmetic changes since it was designed in 1964 and opened in 1966. Most significant is the placement of the tabernacle in the main body of the sanctuary. The original concrete of the pillars has been covered with wood, as have the altar base and lectern.
Changes over the years, however, have not weakened the interplay of light and shade in the church. As you turn into the nave of the church a blade of light stretches from the back to the front, along the line where the sharp drop of the vertical wall reaches the windows of the lower level roof. The slope of the right hand ceiling provides a backdrop for the lightshow created by the coloured windows on the left wall (see photos above).
The lockdown of 2020 afforded us the opportunity to upgrade the toilet facilities and to remove the curtains that hung behind altar, revealing the original brickwork. The renewal of the lighting has enhance the appearance of the church and the complete re-wiring has made sure we are up-to-date with health and safety requirements.
